Culture for new age
I love this short video by Gary Hamel (management thinker and author). It paints a vivid picture of organisations that are fit for the future and fit for human beings - resilient, inventive, inspiring and accountable.
Hamel says the single most important invention in the 20th Century was the invention of “modern" management; however, it was developed more than a century ago to meet conditions that no longer exist. It was designed to keep people in their place and to work like semi-programmable robots. It was great for making sure people showed upon time to tend machines that produced the same thing over and over again. Its aim was to maximise standardisation, specialisation, control and shareholder interest.
Since then the world has changed. Today’s values are community, flexibility, transparency and self-determination. Management has not kept up. It is damaging to the people who work in the business model and it is damaging the planet.
Todays management challenge is to evolve the management model at least as fast as change itself.
