To double check your suitability
If you believe in training these Programs may not be for you.
I don’t believe in training, I think you train a dog. By "training" I have in mind someone who instructs, tell, informs people of the best way to do things. However, if you see yourself as facilitating development of people then keep reading. By "facilitator" I have in mind someone who guides, listens, supports and helps people see the best in themselves. Research shows that people can be reminded of things and helped to develop their strengths. As a facilitator it’s important that you are not like the child in the following story:
Story:
"A child was keeping a caterpillar as part of the school science project. It spun itself a cocoon. She watched as it tried to emerge, then things stopped. The girl could see the butterfly could not escape so she got some scissors and cut the cocoon so the butterfly could escape. When the butterfly came out its body was too large and wings too small. The butterfly couldn't fly and soon died. What she didn't know was that the butterfly needed to struggle. Struggling strengthened its wings and without the struggle the butterfly was not ready for life."
As Confucius said: “What the undeveloped man seeks is outside. What the advanced man seeks is within himself.”
If you think development is about making weak people strong these Programs may not be for you.
These Programs focus on strengths, not weaknesses. Every person has their strengths and their weaknesses. The aim is to help each participant find their strengths (even genius) because this allows them to build their careers around their strengths. It helps them team up with people who are strong where they they are weak, resulting in a team of strong people overall. Also as people feel stronger they become big people. Big people look for the best in others while small people look for weaknesses in others and make them feel small too.
If you are a motivator these Programs may not be for you.
When I have been in the presence of a ‘motivator’, I have sucked up their energy and felt stronger, the trouble is when the motivator goes, so does my energy. Real motivation is internal. It has nothing to do with an external motivator, and everything to do with the way the participants feel about themselves. The aim of this Program is to make participants feel strong, and the more you as facilitator can be in the background the better. Facilitators take on a quiet guidance role, underneath more than on top, pulling more than pushing.
If you want a one-day or one-off session these Programs may not be for you.
One day workshops nearly always disappoint because they do not allow sufficient time for participants to change life-long habits. The aim of these Programs are to create new habits. This takes at least 4 months. It’s why the Program is held over an extended period. It's why we nearly always structure the Programs as a series of half-day workshops.
If you think you are all-wise these Programs may not be for you.
These Programs assume people learn best from peers who share the same daily experiences. These Programs are based on story-telling. For example: ‘My greatest leadership accomplishment’ and ‘The person who influenced me most’. As participants tell each other stories, connections are made, conversations become more meaningful, and trust is built.
If you are looking for a Program that you can apply to your customer without understanding their organisation and their needs then these Programs may not be for you.
These Programs are a great starting-point and you will be given Diagnostics to help you think through the appropriate modules to meet your customers needs, however, you will need to understand your customer and work with them to design an appropriate Program. Bruce Holland is available to discuss the options.
If you think development should be all about the head these programs may not be for you.
These Programs are designed to help people grow in four ways: Body (physically), Head (intellectualyl). Heart (emotionally) and Soul (spiritually).
