As young children we start off with a healthy core of greatness, but before long it gets covered in layers of doubt, fear and guilt. Often this is caused by people we trust most like parents, teachers and managers who put us down in subtle and less subtle ways. It’s as though people were flicking bits of mud at us until our core of greatness is totally covered. Even worse, we flick mud at ourselves by accepting smaller versions of ourselves through negative self-talk and poor thinking; and we become a tiny fraction of the potential that once existed.
Put these people together in an organisation and the problem is amplified exponentially. The system develops a strongly negative self-reinforcing downward spiral. The organisation becomes a “nothing organisation.”
In my view, breaking through this organisational mud is the greatest opportunity available to business today; first, because the environment has changed; second, because the potential is vast; and third, because no one else is doing it. The purpose of my Program is to liberate this potential.
The environment has changed. Our core of greatness is a combination of (in order of importance) Body, Head, Heart and Soul. The industrial revolution reduced the value of Body (physical energy) by replacing humans with machines. Its impact has been vast and is still sending shockwaves through business today.
We are now entering a second revolution caused by disruptive technology (digital printing, robotics, artificial intelligence). This revolution will reduce the value of Head (intellectual energy). McKinsey estimates that it will be 10 times the size of the industrial revolution, happening at 300 times the scale, with roughly 3,000 times the impact.
The things that will add most value in the future are Heart (emotional energy) and Soul (spiritual energy); and organisations that are able to capture this and put it to work most effectively will be the winners in the future.
When I am talking about Heart, I’m thinking about bringing out the goodness that is inside every person, and amplifying the humanity in people. Leaders who do this are “Cracking Great Leaders”, their tools are cooperation, connectedness, and loving. As I say in my book, there is a bit of God and a bit of the Devil inside each of us and leaders who choose to amplify the good are the ones that will win.
When I am talking about Soul, I’m thinking about tying work to something bigger than ourselves, doing stuff that is good for humanity and the planet, reminding ourselves that we are more connected and more powerful than most of us believe. Leaders who do this are Cracking Great Leaders, their tools are more meaning, more legacy, more purpose and more passion.
For the last 25 years I have been working with large to medium organisations in the private and public sector, helping them release human energy, especially Heart and Soul. The results have been amazing for them and provided me with a highly profitable and worthwhile career. I have now decided it is time to make my intellectual property available to other consultants, HR specialists and OD practitioners.
